A stroll meander is a natural coastal feature, such as a meandering stream, marsh or fen, formed by water movement or erosion. Stroll meanders are not confined to watercourses, for example, meanders in the Marjorie Marsh area of the Bristol Channel are believed to have formed via sea-level change. Also, ancient dunes on the East Sussex coast are known to be the result of meander movement.
Natural meanders are most common in soft sediments, such as loess, but can also form in harder substrates, for example the Pennines of the United Kingdom. The formation of meanders is closely related to the lateral-drainage pattern of a landscape, where meandering courses are generated by the faster flowing of the lateral component of a watercourse, rather than its main flow, as is the case with streams. Meander formation is also common in sandpits, and meanders within these are known as a channel meander.
The Geological Society of London has a special interest group called the Geological Society's Stroll Meander Group, who maintain a register of meanders on their website.
